NEW YORK (AP) -- Falling concrete knocked a construction worker off a catwalk and sent him plunging about 15 stories off the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, authorities said Friday.
Manuel Pereira, 48, of Manhattan, was on a wooden catwalk that was suspended from the lower level of the span when a concrete barrier fell onto the wood and knocked him to the ground, killing him, said Fire Department spokesman Jim Long.
The lower level of the bridge, which links Brooklyn and Staten Island, was closed to traffic for several hours following the afternoon accident. It was reopened for the evening rush hour.
