NEW YORK (AP) The 265 victims who died in the crash of
American Airlines Flight 587 will be remembered at a memorial
service on the eighth anniversary of the disaster.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg will speak at Thursday morning's
ceremony in the Rockaway Park section of Queens.
Flight 587 was destined for Santo Domingo in the Dominican
Republic when it crashed on Nov. 12, 2001, after taking off from
Kennedy International Airport. The air disaster jarred city
residents still shaken from the terrorist attacks on the World
Trade Center just two months earlier.
The annual service is held at a granite memorial that honors the
260 people on board the aircraft and the five people on the ground
killed when the plane crashed in the nearby Belle Harbor
neighborhood.
