NEW YORK (AP) New York City's council speaker, who is gay, is
making an impassioned plea for the state Senate to pass a bill
legalizing same-sex marriage when it meets this week.
Christine Quinn told reporters Monday that just having the bill
on the agenda for Tuesday's special session gives gay New Yorkers
hope.
She says ''New Yorkers like me'' start thinking about where to
hold a wedding, what would the dress look like.
Quinn says ''you start picking up cheesy bridal magazines.''
The speaker pleaded with the state Senate to stand up and say
that everybody's family matters.
Gov. David Paterson has planned a special session to address his
spending cuts and possibly consider measures including the same-sex
marriage bill.
